Source Investigations are conducted by law enforcement agencies to reduce alcohol-impaired driving crashes that may result in injuries and/or deaths. In 2012 the NLLEA received funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under Cooperative Agreement #DTNH22-12-H-00373/0001 to work with two alcohol law enforcement agencies on increasing source investigation efforts. As part of the project, the NLLEA developed a source investigation toolkit.
This source investigation toolkit is designed to expand the utilization of source investigations by law enforcement and provide agencies the tools necessary to carry out effective and successful source investigations. The components of this toolkit can be used to create a new program or strengthen existing source investigation efforts. The toolkit provides checklists, steps, and samples that can be used during trainings and out in the field and the pieces can be used together or as stand-alone elements.
